Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell prototype fuels our electric dreams with 526 horses

Oh, electric supercar, why do you tease us so? Mercedes is latest to throw up a prototype of what it expects future rubber burners to look like, and its SLS E-Cell doesn’t disappoint. Based on its petrol-guzzling SLS AMG model, this beast produces 526 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque, thanks to four motors (one for each wheel) allied to a battery array that can provide an industry-leading 480kW of juice. How fast does that get you to the magical 60mph marker? Try four seconds. There’s a handsome 10-inch infotainment panel in the center console, which you may see after the break, but the best news is that this prototype can be driven now and could well turn into a production Benz at some point in 2013.

Looking after a cell phone to most people means buying a protective case and a screen protector, but what a lot of us don’t think to do is clean it regularly. That precious iPhone sitting in your pocket is touched by your hands throughout the day, thrown in a pocket, left on multiple surfaces, and

Bing Entertainment integrates Zune Marketplace purchases, improves Microsoft’s media swagger

Bing, Microsoft’s “decision engine,” is wading into the entertainment realm today with the revelation that searches for music, lyrics, games, TV shows, and movies will get a new special sauce treatment from here on out. You’ll now be able to play 100 basic games right in your search results, along with full-length streaming of songs (first time only, 30 seconds thereafter) from a 5 million-strong catalog. The latter is augmented with “one-click” purchases from the Zune Marketplace (directly through the web, no need to launch the app), Amazon, or iTunes music libraries. Movie tickets are promised to be similarly easy to buy, though the biggest new feature might well be the Bing.com/entertainment page, which acts as a portal into your media consumption with a selection of the most popular content in each category. It doesn’t look terribly different from the iTunes storefront, but given its partnership with Apple’s digital music shop, we doubt Bing’s Entertainment section is perceived as much of a threat — not yet, anyway. As to that other search giant, Google’s been said to already be putting together a music store of its own. Man, all this integration and interconnectedness — just where will it end?

Kinect tech destined for TV-embedded greatness in 2011, HTPC integration later this year

Posted by Celeste | Posted in Web News | Posted on The Flip Cam Store

From Tel Aviv unknown to Xbox gaming wunderkind, PrimeSense has already had quite a run, but the camera-control tech that powers Kinect is destined for new applications before long. VP Adi Berenson tells us the company’s already signed deals to put PrimeSense inside HTPCs by the end of the year, and has at least one cable company ready to launch a gesture-controlled set top box by summer 2011. The end goal is to provide natural human control over TV-based media consumption, said Berenson, who’s working to get cameras in TVs themselves sometime late next year.

Like Kinect, these solutions will have a pair of 640 x 480 camera sensors to measure user position in 3D space, but don’t expect them to have motorized tilt functionality or voice recognition — PrimeSense said it won’t be able to make those available for manufacturers, as they’re all Microsoft ideas. The gesture recognition has reportedly evolved, though, and we’re eager to check that out soon. See what it used to look like in our GDC 2010 preview.

The official Twitter app is keeping up with the times by rolling out iOS 4 support in its latest build. With the program now able to run in the background, you’ll finally be able to send tweets while switching in and out of other applications. It also means you won’t have to relaunch the app every time you want to check up on the latest happenings, it’ll just keep your place like a good and loyal piece of software. Retina Display-friendly graphics are also part of the new package, along with “more secure” tweeting, if you ever felt insecure about the integrity of you shorthand missives. All it’s missing now are the millions of “sent from my iPhone 4″ messages, a gap we’re sure you’ll be filling pronto.

Oh sure, Acer may have spent the first half of the week convincing us that its newest laptops and netbooks were the sweetest systems around, but now it’s turning the attention to its Gateway brand only tempt us with equally as enticing options. The ID series has been on our radar ever since we saw its blue-glowing touchpad at Computex, and luckily both the 14-inch ID49 and 15.6-inch ID59 will hit US retailers for less than $800 in the coming weeks. The exact configurations are unclear, but they’ll have Core i3 / i5 CPU options as well as NVIDIA Optimus graphics. On the netbook front, Gateway’s bringing out the 10.1-inch LT23, which looks the same as the LT22 we caught a glimpse of a few weeks back. Powered by an Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive, the netbook will start at a tempting $329. Check out the gallery below for some shiny press shots and the full press release after the break. Oh and Acer, we’re giving you permission to chill on the new laptops for a bit!

PwnageTool 4.0 hacktivation is go for iOS 4

Posted by Celeste | Posted in Web News | Posted on The Flip Cam Store

You waited patiently for the Dev-Team to pull together all the developer betas and now it’s time for your reward: PwnageTool 4.0 has been released. The latest hack from team jailbreak works with previously jailbroken iPhone 3GS devices with the old bootrom, all iPhone 3G models, and yes, the second generation iPod touch too. It doesn’t work with the original iPhone and other iPod touch models and, as always, there are plenty of caveats and bold print warnings to heed. But if you manage to weave your way into a jailbroken device (as we did with our iOS 4 iPhone 3G using redsn0w) then the latest copy of ultrasn0w will now unlock all basebands released since 04.26.08, including the updated version found in iOS 4. So get cracking kids, and remember, buckle up, back up, and be safe.

Gateway Gets Chic with ID Series and L23 Notebooks

Posted by Celeste | Posted in Web News | Posted on The Flip Cam Store

Gateway’s new LT23 netbooks and ID series notebooks go for style, but also offer long battery life and Nvidia Optimus graphics-switching technology.

Computer maker Gateway has decided to go for the stylish and chic with its latest notebook computers, taking the wraps off a new ID series and LT23 series of fashionable systems today. The LT23 netbook offers up to 8 hours of battery life and a selection of fashion-friendly cases, while the ID series cranks up to 14- and 15-inch screens with optional Nvidia Optimus graphics switching technology to power pixels through games and entertainment, but sip battery power for email and everyday computing.

First up, the new ID series will be available with 14- and 15-inch displays running at 1,366 by 768 resolution, but maybe the first thing people will notice about them is an electric blue multi-gesture trackpad that lights up when touched. The systems will be available with Intel Core i3 and Core i5 processors, up to 4 GB of RAM, up to 500 GB of hard drive storage, along with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam, two noise-canceling microphones, a multi-in-one memory card reader, built-in DVD drive, and HDMI output for connecting to a home theater system or HDTV. The Gateway ID49 will also feature Nvidia Optimus technology, enabling users to switch between Nvidia GT330M graphics for videos, games, and multimedia applications, while switching back to Intel integrated graphics for less demanding applications. Gateway hasn’t revealed exactly when the ID series will land at retail partners, but the 15.6-inch ID59 model will start at a suggested price of $799.99, while the ID49 model will start at $679.99.

Next, the Gateway LT23 netbook aims for the fashion-conscious computer user looking for a highly portable system. The LT23 features a 10.1-inch display, Intel Atom N450 processor, 1 GB of RAM, up to 250 GB of hard drive storage, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, an integrated HD webcam, a multi-in-one digital media card reader, built-in Ethernet, VGA output, three USB 2.0 ports, and a total weight of just 2.76 pounds with a six-cell battery—a battery that Gateway says can give up to 8 hours of use. The LT23s also sport a “sophisticated” design with an organic, mosaic-like pattern women into the case in champagne, pearl, and black color schemes. The Gateway LT23 should be available now from Gateway’s retail partners for prices starting at $329.99.

HP Mini 100e gets official for the little kickers

Posted by Celeste | Posted in Web News | Posted on The Flip Cam Store

We hate to crush your dreams of a World Cup-branded netbook — and we know that’s exactly what that looks like up there — but it’s really just an example of how schools can customize HP’s new 10.1-inch Mini 100e. Sorry to have killed everything you’ve ever had to live for, but doesn’t it make you happy to know that the kids can watch Justin Bieber NOVA videos on netbooks with different colors and designs? Rhetorical questions aside, HP’s finally sharing the details on the education-aimed laptop we spotted a few weeks ago at Computex, and as expected, it has the typical netbook internals, including an Intel Atom N455 processor, 1GB of RAM, and a choice of decently sized hard drives. HP will also have Windows 7 Starter, XP, and SuSE Linux operating system options. While we’re told the 3.2-pound netbook will start at under $299, HP won’t actually be selling units directly to consumers — instead it will only be taking bulk orders from schools. Still the 100e seems like a very worthy Classmate PC and Dell Latitude 2110 competitor, especially when you consider that it can be tricked out with a colorful keyboard, like the one in the gallery below. After you’re done crying that one of those will never be yours, feel free to hit the break for the full press release.

Buzz Aldrin’s iPhone App Shows You Space From His Point Of View

Posted by Celeste | Posted in Web News | Posted on The Flip Cam Store

Possibly the most media-savyy astronaut in history just brought his act to your iPhone.  Don’t worry, Buzz won’t be rapping in this one.  Instead, the second man on the moon lends his name and image to the Buzz Aldrin Portal to Science and Space Exploration, an educational iPhone app with an overwhelming amount of information space enthusiasts will find engaging.

You start the app with a nice-looking photomontage loader of Buzz, which segues nicely into the main menu in a few seconds.   The app is grouped into five sections: SpaceBuzz, News, Interactive, Buzz Life, and More.  Navigating between each requires a lot of tapping back and forth, but none too troublesome to ruin the experience.  In fact, the app remembers where you exited a category last session, so it puts you back on the same topic every time you enter it again, which is a nice touch.

Most of the action lies in SpaceBuzz, where you can choose from among ten sections, including crowd-pleasers like the Mars exploration, space tourism and space mysteries.  Each one runs very deep, so it’s like an all-in-one reference for a ton of things that has to do with the industry. Almost every topic gets Buzz’s take on it, allowing you to really get a clearer idea of the famed astronaut’s overall view on the big picture.  This is interspersed with other experts’ views (called Roundtable), allowing for a fuller take on almost every subject with different sides given adequate air time.  They also include links to specific related Twitter feeds throughout the app, allowing you to further your research on any particular interest.

As for the other categories: News gives you access to various news outlets for space-related information; Interactive bundles together all opinion-based sections of the app (Buzz’s Takes, Roundtable, Q&A and more); Buzz Life gives you access to media about the man and his work; and More has all the other stuff that don’t fit elsewhere (Ask Buzz, podcasts, etc).

Overall, the Buzz Aldrin Portal to Science and Space Exploration is literally a book-worthy compilation of space resources that goes beyond the starter data you’ll often find in anything that attempts to cover the topic this broadly.  For both amateur and expert space enthusiasts, this thing is a veritable treasure trove, priced at a cheap $1.99.
