Square working on ‘a credit processing and risk issue’ before shipping more card readers

If you’ve tried to get in on Square’s mobile payment system, you know that a critical part of the whole setup is the tiny credit card reader that plugs into your phone’s headphone jack — and in all likelihood, you don’t have it. The company just sent out a message to those who’ve signed up for their service today, saying that a prior hardware shortage is resolved but that it’s only half of the problem; the other half, and arguably a more serious one, is that the company needs to find a way to “handle the huge demand for readers and still manage the risk of chargebacks and fraud.” So far, those risks have been mitigated by setting limits very low, but customers have apparently complained that they’re too low, which is requiring a “rethinking and expanding” of the company’s underwriting. Everyone’s being assured that they’ll be good to go once this whole process is over and clients go through a credit check — but in the meantime, Square readers might be a little scarce, so it’s back to IOUs and pocket change for a while. See the full letter after the break.

Acer expects to overtake HP as world’s biggest laptop vendor by year’s end

Ah, the inexorable rise of a once-small Taiwanese company. Acer chairman JT Wang has told investors in a conference call this week that his company is on track to overtake HP in worldwide laptop shipments before the year is through. That assertion is backed up by Gartner’s data, cited in the Wall Street Journal, which indicates that Acer shipped 9.49 million mobile computers in the first quarter of 2010, just ahead of HP’s 9.47 million. Positive vibes are also being felt on the desktop front, where Acer aims to shift 10 million units this year, while a decent $15 million is being invested into “developing a a smartphone platform based on Google Inc.’s Android.” We’ll be curious to see whether this thrifty strategy pays off against HP’s ebullient $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm, but one thing’s for sure: PC vendors are hungry for some of that sweet smartphone pie.

Nintendo 3DS to allow for game installs?

Posted by Celeste | Posted in Web News | Posted on The Flip Cam Store

Here’s an interesting little tidbit from Japan’s financial newspaper Nikkei. According to an article translated by andriasang — who also provided information this morning on a wireless ebook reader — Nintendo’s 3DS will be able to copy multiple games to internal memory and selected from the menu. Now, that can be interpreted in many ways. It could mean 3DS carts installing fully on the system à la Xbox 360′s game install. Another — and we think more likely — interpretation is that games can be downloaded via some store and saved internally. At this point, however, we don’t have any details on a 3DS online marketplace, and in an interview with Joystiq, the company’s in-house legend Shigeru Miyamoto wouldn’t comment on compatibility with current DSiWare. As for theoretic storage capacity, Nintendo still isn’t saying how much internal memory is in the device, but we do know the SD card slot is still there. All this discussion, of course, is assuming the translation is correct, and since we’re currently unable to verify for ourselves, consider all this a rumor right now.

We sat the new Xbox 360 Slim console down next to the original Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 Slim to see just how much Microsoft shaved off from the previous model and how well it stacks up to Sony’s Slim competitor.

Cool, so it’s a little shorter and even uglier. awesome. What makes these compaines think gloss black is the way to go? The ps3 slim looks SO much better now that it is matte, same with the DSi. This thing looks like some LA coke dealer’s 80′s laserdisc player…

I think you can still pick up the non-slim though right? Or are they doing away with the white Xbox 360′s altogether?

Apple launches ‘Find My iPhone’ app to remotely wipe and find your lost treasure

Posted by Celeste | Posted in Web News | Posted on The Flip Cam Store

Stay with us here because this one isn’t obvious. Apple just launched its Find My iPhone app on the iTunes App Store — a service previously limited to MobileMe’s web interface. The App will find your iPhone or iPad or iPod touch should it be lost or stolen. So obviously, you don’t install it on your lost/stolen device, you install it on a different iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, yours or somebody else’s (try a Starbucks). Panicked owners can then login with their MobileMe account to map their missing property and then remotely lock the device or wipe the data. The App can only be installed on iOS 3.1.3 or later devices and is available now for free.

OnLive turns sentient, now beaming gaming goodness over the ether (update)

Posted by Celeste | Posted in Web News | Posted on The Flip Cam Store

We were promised cloud gaming nirvana on June 17, and OnLive has indeed kept to its self-imposed schedule. The new service that allows you to play resource-hungry games via only your browser window has taken its first steps into the real (non-beta) world with an initial catalog of 23 games. It’ll be free for the first year for those who showed faith early on and pre-registered, or $15 per month for new bandwagon riders. Do let us know your thoughts if you’ve gotten onboard at this nascent stage: does it play fantastically well, is it close to spectacular, or is it just a pedestrian effort aiming to capitalize on geeks’ lust for unbound gaming? We have to know.

[Thanks, Mike]

Update: OnLive’s site doesn’t seem to have been updated to reflect the service going live (you can sign up, but can’t just jump in and play). It might be, therefore, that OnLive is booting itself up in stages, with only the early birds getting the first bite.

F.E.A.R. 3 – Hands-On Impressions

Posted by Celeste | Posted in Web News | Posted on The Flip Cam Store

At E3, developer Day 1 and Publisher Warner Brothers showed off the third game in the first-person shooter Fear franchise.

The F.E.A.R. franchise is now officially a trilogy, as the story of the creepy child turned super-creepy woman, Alma, continues. The game is due out on October 20, but we got a chance to play a bit of the game at E3.

For those not familiar with the soon-to-be-trilogy, the name is a double entendre. First, it is an anagram for the special government soldiers assigned to investigate paranormal occurrences- the unfortunately named First Encounter Assault Recon. Second it is because the game is scary! See, the team name is F.E.A.R., and the game is all about fear! Get it?

Anyway, the story of the series revolves around a girl named Alma that was discovered as a child to have extreme psychic powers. Scientists then began to experiment on her, and naturally, things do not go well. Alma’s powers soon take on a dark tone, and the just before she turns 18, she is put into an induced coma and impregnated twice.

In the first game, you play as “Point Man”, a member of the F.E.A.R. team sent to investigate an attack by a guy named Fettel on the research facility that it turns out is responsible for imprisoning Alma in the first place. The rest of what happens is spoilers, so if you are intending to play the F.E.A.R. games and wish to remain a virgin to the story, skip the next paragraph. Thar be spoilers here!

In a super gross twist, Alma had two children while in a coma. The first turned out to be Fettel, the man attacking the facility (twist!), while the second was revealed to be Point Man himself (double twist!). Fettel is killed and his spirit is captured, while Point Man escapes. In the second game, Alma has survived (of course), and another unit is sent in to stop her. You play as a Delta Force operator named Michael Becket sent in to investigate a bunch of weirdness, which soon turns out to be Alma. As Becket you find Alma and begin to hallucinate. While tripping the light fantastic, Alma finds Becket’s body and has her with it. At the end of the game, Becket wakes up and Alma is pregnant with his child. A DLC was later released that saw a group of soldiers attempting to free Fettel’s spirit. They do so, which leads into the new game.

In F.E.A.R. 3, you once again take control of Point Man, but other than that, most of the plot is being kept under wraps. In the gameplay demo we saw, the co-op was the main feature on display. The game can be played either online or via split screen. The first player controls Point Man, who plays as a traditional first-person shooter protagonist. He does have a bullet-time-style ability that slows everything down, but otherwise he is a straight forward archetype. The second person plays as Fettel, who is a ghost. Fettel is a different type of character, with a unique power set. He cannot pick up weapons, instead replying on telekinetic powers. Fettel also has a very cool trick that allows him to possess enemies, switching him into a traditional first-person style of play for a limited time.

The demo we were shown displayed the brothers working their way through a horde of enemies, each using the abilities at their disposal to great effect. We weren’t given much context for the level we saw, which was a twisted apartment complex that randomly switched to a forest (possibly a hallucination, or some other supernatural tomfoolery), but the feeling of horror is definitely apparent. Once the guided demo ended, we were given a chance to play hands on as Pont Man.

First, the game looks amazing. It moves fluidly, and the graphics are top notch. The first level we saw led to a bridge that showed a ruined city in the distance that was fantastically realized. The lighting and textures also helped add to the dark tones of the game.

The controls were intuitive and easy to pick up, and were responsive and smooth. Fans of the genre will have no trouble adapting, and new gamers should learn easily. The co-op mechanic was an interesting twist, as Fettel, who is a bit weaker, had interesting options, like the possession of enemies. When you are pinned down, to have your teammate suddenly take control of one of the attackers and turn on them, was a cool trick.

Although it was obvious that a tremendous amount of thought and effort was put into the co-op, the single player game is more in the vein of the previous entries, and you will not have a second player with you. Fettel will make appearances as part of the story, but don’t expect an AI-controlled assistant to help you out.

Fans of the series should be extremely excited for this game. What we saw and played looked amazing. Noobs to the series should catch up on the story, then get ready for the third part on October 20.

Warning: This trailer may not be suitable for all ages.

Hands-on with redesigned MobileMe and its pretty app switc

Apple’s MobileMe Mail gets a refresh for some reason

You still using (and paying $99 a year) MobileMe? So you haven’t been lured away by Google’s or Microsoft’s free offerings then? Ok, then you’ll probably notice that MobileMe looks a bit different today. Pictured above is the new MobileMe application switcher that now requires two clicks to do what previously took one (i.e., switch MobileMe applications). Looks pretty though. Mail is the biggest change with new widescreen (pictured above) and compact views, rules, single-click archiving, a formatting toolbar, and SSL all introduced in the beta last month. Huzzah?

P.S. Sadly, that’s a screengrab from our actual MobileMe account. Somebody please remind us why we still pay for this?
